At the eight-hour mark, other class leaders were the No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 488 GTE of James Calado in GT Le Mans (GTLM); Jeroen Bleekemolen in the No. 33 ViperExchange.com Dodge Viper GT3-R in GT Daytona (GTD); and the No. 52 PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports ORECA FLM09 of Jose Gutierrez in Prototype Challenge.

Running sixth overall was good enough to clinch the third consecutive Patrón Endurance Cup in the Prototype class for Christian Fittipaldi and Joao Barbosa, drivers of the No. 5 Action Express Racing Mustang Sampling Corvette Daytona Prototype. Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner clinched in GTLM by running third in the No. 3 Corvette Racing Chevrolet Corvette C7.R. In PC, Kenton Koch captured the driver’s title in the second-place No. 38 Performance Tech Motorsports ORECA FLM09, while the class-leading No. 52 PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports ORECA clinched the team title.

Action Express Racing added another chapter to its illustrious history in IMSA's Prototype class after Dane Cameron and Eric Curran secured the team's third consecutive championship.
Each championship, including the 2014 and 2015 titles for Joao Barbosa and Christian Fittipaldi in the sister AXR entry, were earned using the Corvette Daytona Prototype.

"It’s unbelievable, it’s going to take a while to sink in," Curran said after watching Cameron cross the finish line in fourth to clinch the title.
"We really won this for Sonny Whelen."

The championship completes a remarkable journey for Cameron and Curran.

Cameron raced and won in DPs within the former Grand-Am Rolex Series in 2013, lost his ride late in the offseason as the new IMSA series was preparing to launch, rebounded in its lowest-tier class, and promptly won the GT Daytona title.

As Sonny Whelen's longstanding driver, Curran scored multiple wins in the Pirelli World Challenge GT category before they moved to Grand-Am Rolex GT competition, and with his first introduction to DPs in 2014 with a different team, it's fair to say Curran was not provided with everything he needed to reach his potential.

Drafted into the AXR team as the leader of the No. 31 Whelen Corvette DP, Cameron took the role of prototype mentor and coach with his new teammate, and quickly shaped Curran's GT talent into something that led the team to Victory Lane.

Two wins in 2015 and third in the championship spoke volumes about their progress, and with a year of experience together, Curran found another gear once the new season began. Once considered easy prey for the prototype veterans, Curran spent a decent portion of 2016 either holding off his more celebrated teammates or building leads the two-time champions.

The all-American teammates, driving an America-built Coyote chassis powered by a Chevrolet V8 engine, for an American team ... IMSA has a wonderful story to tell until the next Prototype champions are crowned 12 months from now.

Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner are the new IMSA GT Le Mans champions.
The No. 4 Corvette Racing drivers used a mix of intensity and restraint during the 10-hour Petit Le Mans season finale at Road Atlanta to earn their second title since 2012, and helped Chevrolet to win its 11th Manufacturers' title since the program was formed in 1999.

“It feels really good,” Milner said.
“Just happy with the whole day, to finish the season off strong.
Unfortunately for the No. 67 [Ford] guys, it would have been fun to race them [for the championship] until the end, but I’m just so proud to be part of the Corvette Racing team. The best success of my career, by far, is with them and it gets better and better every year.”

The Drivers' championship is the second for America's Milner and the fifth for England's Gavin.
With help from Marcel Fassler, who joined the duo for the endurance events, the No. 4 Corvette opened the year with wins at IMSA's most hallowed events, the Rolex 24 At Daytona and the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, added two more wins at Lime Rock and Road America, and stretched their points lead with a pair of second-place finishes at Long Beach and Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

The No. 4 team fought the Ford Chip Ganassi Racing team for most of the summer as the No. 67, driven by former Corvette drivers Ryan Briscoe and Richard Westbrook, went on a three-race winning streak from Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to CTMP. Mechanical issues at the penultimate round torpedoed the No. 67's realistic chances of landing the championship, and with more problems leaving the car 19 laps behind tonight, the pace and proven reliability of the C7.R was too much for the GTLM field to overcome.

Chevrolet Claims Pair of IMSA Manufacturer Championships at Petit Le Mans

GT Le Mans and Prototype titles clinched with Green flag of 10-hour endurance race

Chevrolet is IMSA’s winningest manufacturer over past three seasons
Fifth consecutive Prototype Engine Manufacturer championship
GTLM Manufacturer title is 11th in production-based IMSA competition
First manufacturer to claim multiple championships in one season since 2009

BRASELTON, Ga. (Oct. 1, 2016) – Chevrolet has claimed Manufacturer Championships in the two premier classes of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. With the green flag for the 10-hour Petit Le Mans, Chevrolet is assured of securing enough points to win both the 2016 Prototype Engine Manufacturer Championship and the GT Le Mans Manufacturer Championship.

"Chevrolet is honored to win Manufacturer championships in both the Prototype and GTLM classes," said Mark Reuss, GM executive vice president, global product development, purchasing and supply chain.
"Thank you to our Chevrolet teams, drivers and technical partners for their dedication and commitment that resulted in these championships."

These titles add to Chevrolet’s position as the most successful manufacturer during the post-merger era of sports car racing with 31 race wins since 2014. Chevy’s 20 wins in Prototype and 11 in GTLM are both class records.
It’s also the first time since 2009 that the same manufacturer claimed more than one title in IMSA competition during a single season.

Since the debut of the Corvette Daytona Prototype in 2012, Chevrolet and its teams have won 35 races and five consecutive manufacturer championships.

In GTLM, the Corvette C7.R program delivered Chevrolet’s 11th GT production class manufacturer title against some of the best competition in the world.
The two Chevrolet Corvette C7.Rs won on North America’s biggest stages – including the Rolex 24 At Daytona and the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.

"Competing with Corvettes in the IMSA series is important because it allows us to learn and transfer technologies between the race track and the showroom," Reuss said.

CORVETTE RACING AT ROAD ATLANTA: First-Half Driver Quotes

MSA – WEATHERTECH SPORTSCAR CHAMPIONSHIP
PETIT LE MANS PRESENTED BY HARRAH’S CHEROKEE CASINO RESORT
ROAD ATLANTA
CORVETTE DRIVER IN-RACE UPDATES
OCT. 1, 2016

OLIVER GAVIN, NO. 4 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C7.R:

"So far, so good. We’ve been making steps with this Corvette and we’ve been moving forward. When Tommy (Milner) was in the car, he was gaining places, he was moving up the order, and I was doing the same.
We started off second after that last restart because the guys did a great job and got us out ahead of the No. 66 and then I got past the No. 62 going into Turn One on that restart. He got bumped a little bit by a PC car, but then we had pace.
Our engineer, Chuck Houghton, made a good call there on the tires.
We switched those up and the car was really switched-on and that was fantastic. I could drive it hard and aggressive. We managed to pull away from the Ferrari, and I could pick my points in the traffic.

"But the track is breaking up in Turn Three and that was getting worse and worse during my stint. I know the guys are looking at it. This caution has allowed us to get Marcel (Fässler) in the car. Marcel is back with us which is great.
He was our lucky charm in Daytona and Sebring. He is such a great guy to have with us. Huge experience; three Le Mans wins.
The guy knows endurance racing inside out. So we’ll just plug him in and see how he goes the next two hours.
Then Tommy will get back in, and then I will get back in and we will see how it goes.

"Over the years this track has been good to me.
It has been good to the No. 4 Corvette. It is a good place for us to finish the championship. We always seem to go well here. We test well here. We had a good test here about three to four weeks ago. It has been a bit of the battle to get the car right here with the different kinds of rubber here. Fundamentally, that’s starting to come to us now. We have the right tire on the car, and we are moving forward.
I feel like we can take anyone on, and be the best. It has an amazing way to finish off the year. To win three of the four big enduros on the year in this championship would be amazing. To win the triple crown of Daytona, Sebring and Petit Le Mans would be very special.
But there are going to be plenty more bumps in the road. Plenty more things that can happen.

"We just have to execute.
Ben Johnson our team manager, told us all in the meeting before the start of the race that if we execute here, this race will come to us – just do our jobs, do them well and we will find the front or go toward the front.
For us in the championship, this is what we want. We’ve managed to sew up the Manufacturer’s Championship for Chevrolet which is just amazing. Another year of doing that, it is fantastic. I’m just very proud to be a part of this amazing program.
Fingers crossed that if we keep doing our jobs, we can get the Team championship and the Driver’s championship. It would be a year with a clean sweep."

JAN MAGNUSSEN, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C7.R:

"I took it very easy to begin with. I didn’t want to risk the car; I really wanted to find the balance and see where we were compared to everyone else. It wasn’t great at first. I was struggling with top speed, plus I had a little too much understeer.
We made an adjustment to the car, which made it a lot better. It was very well-behaved and fast. I was able to charge.
Things are quite good and I’m very happy. Calm and collected is the strategy for the next 20 hours, I think."

JORDAN TAYLOR, WAYNE TAYLOR RACING NO. 10 KONICA MINOLTA CORVETTE DP:

"It’s been ok.
Everyone has been struggling with the track. With the heating in the middle of the day, we kind of knew the track would start going away from us and we’d start sliding around. In my first stint, I thought we were really good on the tires, and we were all over the 5 car.
I’m not sure if they were playing games but in the second stint they seemed stronger.
I think maybe as it cools down that might work toward us some, kind of like how it did in 2014.
We just need to stay in contention for the next few hours, wait for dusk and then we can attack from there."

RICKY TAYLOR, WAYNE TAYLOR RACING NO. 10 KONICA MINOLTA CORVETTE DP:

"Our car a couple times this year has been really strong at the end of a (stint).
Our guys worked on long runs and stints, and that seems to be a strong point for us.
On the restarts I feel like some of the other cars can gap us but we can get that time back as the stint goes on.

"We’ve made a lot of improvements.
We have a really good car on the long run. Traffic is just very difficult.
It’s unpredictable what some of the drivers are going to do. Staying safe is going to be really important over the next couple hours, and hopefully tonight when it cools down the car keeps this balance.

"The car is good. Maybe we don’t have the outright pace on brand new tires, but over the long run our pace is very good.
Hopefully we can eat into those gaps and overtake people over the course of the run."

(DRIVER TRANSPONDER):

"We have a physiologist and he’s working on improving the driver.
That’s the biggest variable in the whole car. If we can get the best out of us, that will save us to improve our car more and more down the road. It was really interesting with my core body temperature being 102. I’m looking forward to learning more about this.
I took the patch off when I got out of the car, and I’ll put it back on when I get back in. I got weighed before I got in the car and weighed after I got out of the car; that’s probably drinking four pounds of water, too!
Those are numbers that we had an idea about but it’s interesting to see it in real life."
