Blocking Ring
If you have a customer who’s been shifting in this aggressive style, you may encounter this issue – excessive effort needed to engage first gear caused by a suspect first gear blocking ring.
Results when the driver applies the clutch simultaneously while shifting, instead of
applying the clutch first before shifting.
As a result the speed of the output shaft does not match up properly with the speed
of the input shaft. This causes the first gear blocking ring teeth to clash.
Explain to the customer:
• The transmission is working as designed and by allowing the clutch to fully engage prior to shifting, eliminates the root cause of this concern.
• The driver should wait one full second after pressing the clutch before shifting.
If the driver has been operating the vehicle in the manner for an extended period of time it may be necessary to replace the damaged blocking ring, first speed gear and the 1-2 synchro assembly to correct the concern.
These components are replaced off-car.
