Rear Differential Noise
1999-2007 Corvettes, including ZO6
2004-2007 Cadillac XLRs, including V-Series
Owners may experience rear axle chatter on turns originating from a difference in
the static and dynamic friction coefficients between the plates in the differential. This
causes a stick-and-slip situation.
To address this concern:
• Drain the rear axle fluid
• Thoroughly rinse out the differential with brake cleaner
• The friction modifier additive used is GM Part Number 1052358
• This next step is key… vigorously shake the bottle of friction modifier for at
least one full minute prior to use
• Add the friction modifier into one of the bottles of synthetic lubricant, GM Part
Number 89021677, when refilling the axle
PIP 3559B lists the specific amount of Limited Slip Axle Lubricant Additive and
differential lube for your specific application. After assembling the axle, drive the
vehicle slowly in 8-10 figure eights. This will work the fluid in between the clutch
plates. Do not skip these figure eights, they are essential.
If the concern persists, it is often corrected by performing the flush and fill procedure
a second time. This is the preferred repair approach as it prevents the need to
disassemble the rear differential and is thus a much quicker repair.
