General Motors has issued a service F'up update for certain vehicles that use its VIP and GEM architectures in order to reprogram the vehicles’ control modules.

The problem:
Certain 2020 and 2021 model year General Motors vehicles may have had multiple control modules dealer programmed using an incorrect Vehicle Identification Number that did not match the actual VIN of the vehicle, resulting in an incorrect VIN or an incorrect calibration file being programmed into the vehicle.

The hazards:

If a vehicle receives an incorrect calibration file, certain control modules may not be calibrated properly.
This can affect various important systems in the vehicle and prevent them from working as designed.

It’s worth noting that General Motors has only issued a service update for affected vehicles and not a product safety recall, which is an indication that this issue likely poses no direct safety hazard to the driver or other vehicle occupants
(This means you'll have to take your car to the dealer to find out if yours is affected. GM will not notify you).

The fix:

Dealers will be instructed to follow the appropriate module programming event as it relates to the VIN.
This will effectively reprogram the affected control modules and allow them to perform as originally intended.

Affected components: various control modules.
