I assume the 6 speed trannie, engine oil and rear end need some type of coolers for racing. What is out there that is proven to work and who sells them ?

Thanks, J.R

JR, I have heard that Chevy sells a kit, and it may be for both units (trannie and diff). No hard details tho, other than the performance division apparently saw this as a needed item for serious use. If no one else comes up with any hard data anytime soon I can ask a couple of C5 SCCA T1 racers via email. In any case, considering the co-location of the two gearboxes, my initial thought for a from-scratch cooler would be a dual unit.

As a long time electronics nut and generally forgetful person, I like the idea of a temp switch turning the pump on and off.

I believe there are also some concerns about some parts in the C5 manual transmission not being up to snuff for severe use (plastic or some such), perhaps teammate Bill B. can shed more light on that.

Rgds,
Mark

Coolers for the C5...a couple of ways you can go. If you are going to run the ORR's or any other track events that will allow you to be at speed for continious laps, you will need an engine oil cooler, and one each for the diff and the trans. Space is at a premium. Being that your Mallett 435 has a big aftermarket cooler they had designed for them, you probably won't want to replace it with the big rad that Rippie has that incorporates an effective EOC. Second approach is to install an Aeroquip water to oil heat exchanger (cooler) in line on your upper rad hose. Ther is a minor modification that must be done to prevent the oil bypass to function. This will insure that it always is circulating through the EOC. I only know it exists, I don't know exactly what it is. Peter at Rippie told me about it, I'm sure Chuck can tell you what needs to be done. (He uses this method) This is not a problem with the water to oil unit because the oil temp will be stabilized sooner in cooler weather by the water in the rad. As far as the other two, you will need TWO more. GM originally recommended only one. Their logic was that being that they were connected together, that one cooler would "wick" away heat from both. (they must have thought by osmosis wink ) They have since changed their "theory", based on real world experience. I think there is room up front for both. GMPP is supposed to have a new kit out for them. Depending on the mufflers on your C5, some of the tuners are laying the small coolers on their side (flat) where the mufflers used to go. This presumes a SuperTrapp type setup. The other way now is to plant them on the "front" of the rear wheel wells. I think that there are some Z06 rear brake air ducts that are now being used. There's some food for thought. At least it's a point of departure for you. I wish I had more specifics for you.

Mark, I'll check out what G.M performance has and see if what they make is good enough.

Yea I also hear of warping plastic in trannie :-(

TM, since I have used a heat exchanger with the snakeskinner I know the method works well and would be my 1st choice. I also heard of cooler being mounted in wheel well. Will have to chack out and see who has what.
What's G.Ms part performance website address ?
The other issue is oil system itself, I hear under hard Gs in corners maybe sucking air for no windage tray in oil pan ?
and most running with 1 quart over full to protect. No the best fix for sure.

JR, if I'm not cross-posting here, I've also heard of LS1 engine oiling problems under side load (loss of pressure). Overfill seems to be a really kludgy solution (which I've also heard of), but dunno what the actual problem is (windage, baffling, capacity, what-have-you). To top this off, GM apparently approves of a max LS1 oil temp of 300F as well as a partial overfill under road racing conditions. Yikes in all cases. Altho I guess they are referring to the stock 5W30 Mobil-1 fill, this still does not sound good, and from what I've heard it's not attributed to heat or total volume loss. I think the serious closed-course road racers are running dry sump or an aftermaker pan, will have to doublecheck though.

JR, you may want to talk to Chuck. I'm not positive, but I think he told GM about the problem in '97, and may have already modified the pans for his 435 cars. I can't be 100% on this one, so it would be worth a call. (He's in on Saturday AM's, if not all day.) When MJ ran into some GM engineers at the track, I believe that they told him 300deg is "Nooo problem", why the computer doesn't even send a message on the DIC until 325! I guess it then blows up shortly there after. (along with a "you're DIC'ed, no warranty" message)
