Very few know GM has been sneaking in one function via Onstar called "Smart Driver"
Most owners do not even know this was turned on without their being told so
One C8 owner just finds out after driving his C8 for 2 years that this Onstar function not only spying on your driving habits but also is reporting it to like credit agencies and vehicle insurance

Guy states :

I took delivery at the dealer and activated OnStar 2 years ago.
When I was looking at all the OnStar features, I signed up for "Smart Driver" on my phone.
I looked at the data once or twice since then and now can see
the Hard Brake Events, Acceleration Events, High Speed MPH Events etc. on my drives.

I just sent for my credit report info from LexisNexis and saw that GM had been reporting the same data to them that I was seeing.
Needless to say, I was not thrilled. My insurance company had inquired about that data a couple of times and luckily my rates haven't gone up, YET

I just wanted to let anyone know that has the feature "Smart Driver" on their OnStar account to realize the info can be going to your insurance company via your credit report.
This is all GM vehicles, and recall I reported a few months back starting with 2023 models GM forced a mandatory 3 years of Onstar contract, and they add that cost to your buying price, and you cannot opt out of it.

Those with that GM my car APP on their cellphone better go check and turn OFF "Smart Driver"

I have been ranting for years that Onstar ( out of China) is spying on all of you with Onstar even if you did not buy any GM Onstar services
But do not forget all other nameplates pull the same crap as Ford that has Microsoft and Google installed on those vehicles and also spying big time

Now that people are getting learned about Smart Driver

This C8 owner checked his and is crying as to his own C8 is snitching on him smile
Of course a 100 is an A+, you're a pansy ass that never hard launches or speeds

This guy getting only a grade of 50, and he only checked for the last week

For 7 days, the spies know he drove the C8 12 times

Hard braking - 18 times, etc
Hard launches - 65 times !
Almost 20% of time drove over 80 MPH :-(

Wonder what he and spies see for over 1 months time
People are finding they turn smart driver off, and later they find it is back on again

He's screwed smile

A recent report has revealed that several major automakers are covertly sharing detailed driving data from their customers’ vehicles with insurance companies and third-party data brokers.

A recent report has uncovered a concerning practice where car manufacturers, including GM ( via OnStar), Honda, Kia, Hyundai, and others, are secretly gathering and sharing extensive information about their customers’ driving habits with insurance companies and data brokers like LexisNexis and Verisk

This data, collected through optional features like GM’s OnStar Smart Driver or Honda’s Driver Feedback, includes details such as trip dates, distances, speeds, hard braking instances, and rapid accelerations.
While these features are often marketed as tools to help drivers improve their skills, the fine print buried in privacy policies and terms of service reveals a darker truth, the data is being shared with third parties without explicit consent from the drivers.

The case of Kenn Dahl, a 65-year-old software company owner from Seattle, illustrates the gravity of the situation.
Dahl, a careful driver who had never been involved in an accident, was shocked to find that his car insurance premiums had increased by 21 percent in 2022.
Upon requesting his LexisNexis consumer report, he discovered
a staggering 258-page document detailing over 640 trips he and his wife had taken in their Chevrolet Bolt, including specifics like dates, times, distances, and instances of hard braking or rapid acceleration.

Dahl’s experience is far from isolated. Online forums dedicated to various GM vehicles are rife with warnings and complaints from drivers who have experienced similar situations, with some reporting denied insurance coverage or significant premium hikes due to the shared driving data.

The automakers and data brokers involved claim to have obtained consent from drivers through opaque privacy policies and terms of service agreements.
However, many drivers assert that they were unaware of being enrolled in such programs or the extent of data sharing taking place.

Frank Pasquale, a law professor at Cornell University, expressed surprise at these practices, stating,
“Because it’s not within the reasonable expectation of the average consumer, it should certainly be an industry practice to prominently disclose that is happening.”

Policymakers have taken notice of this concerning trend, with California’s privacy regulator launching an investigation into automakers’ data collection practices, and Senator Edward Markey of Massachusetts urging the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to examine potential violations of consumer protection laws.

The implications of this hidden data sharing extend beyond financial concerns.
Privacy advocates warn that the collection and dissemination of such intimate driving details could have far-reaching consequences, from impacting insurance premiums to potentially influencing employment opportunities or even legal proceedings.

General Motors is facing yet another lawsuit, this time over the alleged sharing of driving data without the customer’s approval.

The federal lawsuit, filed against GM and LexisNexis Risk Solutions by GM customer Romeo Chicco, alleges that the sharing of his driving habits in his 2021 Cadillac XT6 led to his rejection by seven auto insurance companies late last year. He finally discovered the reason: information about his speeding, hard braking and acceleration, and trip durations over the course of some 258 trips was being shared with insurance companies, leading to “significantly elevated” insurance premiums, Chicco alleges.

Chicco found out about the sharing of his data from a Liberty Mutual agent who told him he had been rejected because of information in a report from LexisNexis, which provides insurers with data on drivers’ moving violations, accident history, and prior insurance coverage.

Chicco contends the information was collected without his permission, but GM eventually told him he had enrolled in the OnStar Smart Driver program that tracks and rates driving habits and seatbelt use. Chicco denies signing up for the program, though he does admit to downloading the MyCadillac mobile app.

A recent New York Times report detailed how OnStar provides insurance companies with customer driving data through a data broker, with GM issuing this explanation last week:

“GM’s OnStar Smart Driver service is optional to customers, who give their consent three times before limited data is shared with an insurance carrier through a third party. Customer benefits include learning more about their safe driving behaviors or vehicle performance that, with their consent, may be used to obtain insurance quotes. Customers can also unroll from Smart Driver at any time.”

GM claims the Smart Driver program has saved its customers millions of dollars in reduced car insurance rates but says that anyone with an issue over the program can start a live chat, push their blue OnStar button, or call 1-888-466-7827. More information is also available on the web at https://www.onstar.com/support/faq/smart-driver.

This C8 Z06 owner with less than 300 miles on it says this report was sent to his insurance company, and they raised the rates on this C8
Remember GM late last year saying no more spying or selling your data ?

Look at all the bad boy points in just that short mileage
