ZR1 was revealed

2025, we can now talk about the Corvette ZR1, the first in history to surpass the 1,000 horsepower mark and also the first to fit a pair of turbochargers on top of a V8 engine from the "Small Block" series. The eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox remains in place.

Two turbos and lots of horsepower

This new block, dubbed LT7 for the occasion, with a displacement of 5.5 liters, develops the trifle of 1,064 horsepower at a speed of 7,000 rpm and a torque of 828 lb-ft at a speed of 6,000 rpm. It should be noted that the LT7 is born from an LT6 block already in service on board the very high-end Z06.

The block therefore retains its double overhead camshaft and its flat crankshaft, cast cylinder heads with unique ports and an enlarged combustion chamber.
The intake has also been revised to adapt to the turbochargers, while the distribution and the valve lift profile are optimized for forced induction. In addition, the anti-lag engine calibration has been developed for this model to react to the driving style.

Other improvements include increased gear capacity through shot peening for all gears, oil management to support increased longitudinal and lateral capacity, and increased control valves to accommodate higher clutch clamp load, to name a few.
To curb the beast's ardor, the engineers integrated a new carbon-ceramic braking system with 15.7-inch discs at the front and 15.4-inch at the rear with six and four pistons per caliper respectively. This is unsurprisingly the most imposing and biting braking system in the history of the model.

A look all her own

The Corvette ZR1 isn't just about pumping up the mechanics. To better slice through the air or lean more at high speeds, the Corvette ZR1 can be ordered with an optional aerodynamic package made entirely of carbon fiber.
It should be noted that the Corvette ZR1 already comes equipped with a carbon fiber exterior aerodynamic package with a rear spoiler and a front wing, side skirts, and side air intakes. Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires are the stock tires.

However, the ZTK package comes with a larger trunk spoiler, a front wing, and that Gurney-style hood scoop, a ploy to improve the car's aerodynamics and increase downforce. It also helps cool the front-mounted intercooler.
The Magnetic Ride suspension (also available on the base ZR1) has also been tweaked with this package, which comes with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2-R tires.

Split Window

The highlight, however, is at the back, as the designers have brought back the famous "Split Window" over the V8 engine, the central panel that serves to ventilate the engine compartment.
Also, noteworthy is the addition of a carbon fiber roof, unique wheels and even a set (of wheels) in carbon fiber.

New exterior and interior colors have also been added to the catalog of the most desirable Corvette.
Now it remains to be seen how much this true exotic will sell for, the manufacturer who will reveal this information later today.

The King of the Hill Corvette ZR1 will be returning to Chevrolet dealerships in 2025, and it will be the fastest, most powerful Corvette ever! This C8 Corvette is so much more than expected, we now understand why GM used the term “unthinkable” in all the teasers leading up to the reveal.

The new 2025 Corvette ZR1 is powered by a 5.5L twin-turbo DOHC flat-plane crank V8 engine called the LT7. It’s the most powerful V8 engine ever produced in America with 1,064 horsepower at 7,000 RPM and 828 lb-ft of torque at 6,00 RPM per SAE guidelines.
GM test drivers easily surpassed 200 MPH in testing on the Nürburgring, and it clocked a faster time around the Milford Proving Ground’s MRC test track than the C7 ZR1. With a new redline set at 8,000 RPM, the new ZR1 boasts a GM-estimated top speed of over 215 MPH and it’s estimated to have a sub-10 second 0-60 MPH launch time.

The Corvette ZR1’s engine is much more than simply an LT6 with twin turbos.
As the LT6 was being developed, Chevy’s small block engineers created a dual path in development with the goal to “create massive power, capability, and character from naturally aspirated and turbocharged flat-plane crank engines.
For the LT7, engineers changed and optimized virtually every system for the twin-turbo engine to provide the power and reliability that owners expect from a supercar.

The twin turbochargers on the ZR1 are massive at 76 mm and, according to Chevy engineers, they were integrated into the exhaust manifold to reduce the volume and distance from the exhaust valve to the turbine wheel. Engineers also worked on what they call “intelligent anti-lag engine calibrations” specifically designed for the ZR1 which adapts and reacts to your driving style.

GM also needed to make numerous changes to the ZR1’s eight-speed dual-clutch transmission to handle the dramatic increase in power, that includes better oil management and increased control valves to accommodate the higher required clutch clamp load for the LT7.

We’ve all been amazed by the ZR1’s large wing, which has been seen on the ZR1 pre-production prototypes. There are two chassis designs for the new ZR1 that include the base ZR1 and the ZTK Performance Package.

Standard Chassis:

Offers a sleeker body with lower drag and a small spoiler for customer-adjustable short and tall wickers. Essentially, the same set-up as we’ve seen on the base Z06. It also includes a standard carbon fiber front splitter, side rockers, and a new side intake design which sends air to the rear brakes, and it features a front underwing with stall gurney deflectors. The base ZR1 offers Micheline Pilot Sport 4S Tires in a staggered 20/21-inch set up.

ZTK Performance Package:

Like it’s C7 predecessor, the 2025 Corvette ZR1’s optional ZTK Performance Package unlocks the car to create a true track weapon with over 1,200 pounds of downforce at top speed. The ZTK adds the ‘Really High Wing’ as well as front dive planes, and a tall-hood Gurney lip created from woven carbon fiber. Underbody strakes replace the standard underwing stall Gurney to increase downforce.
The ZTK has its own suspension with stiffer springs and buyers will get the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tires.

The Carbon Aero package, featuring all the aero bits from the ZTK package are available on the standard chassis as well.

To ensure that the ZR1 is ready for the world’s toughest tracks, engineers added even more cooling improvements that includes a flow-through hood with air entering the front grille and passing through a radiator before exiting the hood to increase front downforce and to cool charged air temperatures. There is also a new side intake profile with a new opening to directly cool the rear brakes.
For the Coupe, there are two new fresh air intake ducts inn the top of the Coupe’s rear hatch to provide cooler air for the turbo compressor inlet air temperatures.

“We went into the ZR1 program with lofty goals, but even our first development tests on-track showed the teams were already exceeding them,” said Tadge Juechter, executive chief engineer, Corvette. “As we worked to develop this car, we continued to leap past expectations, and we knew we had a special Corvette on our hands.”

As for stopping power, the Corvette ZR1 will employ the largest carbon ceramic brakes ever equipped on a Corvette, with the front rotors measuring 15.7 inches (400mm) and rears are 15.4 inches (390mm). In the press release, GM says that the Corvette ZR1 goes from 80-200 MPH and back to 80 MPH in just 24.5 seconds. That’s 22% quicker than the C7 Corvette ZR1 and 53% quicker than the C8 Corvette ZR1!

The Return of the Split Window

As the ZR1 prototypes were testing in Colorado last year, we made the comment about their rear engine camouflage appearing to show a split window design, and that turned out to be the correct assessment. We can imagine the discussions that went on about bringing back the iconic design element that only appeared on the 1963 Corvette. But that is exactly what we go, albeit in a more modern design.

This new split window ZR1 features a carbon fiber spine between the two rear windows, and it's available either in body color or visible carbon fiber. It’s very functional unlike the original with vents that provide increased heat extraction from the engine compartment.

“We didn’t approach this decision lightly, we know this is a beloved element from Corvette’s history,” said Phil Zak, executive design director, Chevrolet. “Not only does this element provide function, but we were able to integrate passionate design into the form and do it in a way that paid homage to Corvette’s history. ZR1 felt like the right time to bring the split-window back.”

Additional Corvette ZR1 design changes include:

• A carbon fiber roof to reduce mass and lower the center of gravity for both coupe and convertible.
• Unique aluminum wheel design available in four finishes, including Edge Blue, an homage to ZR1’s signature color cue.
• Optional new carbon-fiber wheel design, exclusive to ZR1, to further reduce mass.
• LT7 engine intake finished in Edge Blue, delivering an engine that looks as good as it performs.

Inside the cockpit of the ZR1 are several ZR1 badges found on the steering wheel, plaque, and sill plates.
A boost gauge has also been added to the first factory turbocharged Corvette.

Three new colors for the 2025 model year, & Chevy was gracious to share the first photos of the Corvette ZR1 Coupe & Convertible wearing the new exteriors of Competition Yellow and Hysteria Purple Metallic. In addition, there is a new Habanero (orange) interior, as well as a Blue Stitch option.
Exclusives to the ZR1 will include Blue brake calipers, seat belt colors, and expect even more surprises.

2025 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1: The Fastest, Most Powerful Corvette Ever, The King of the Hill returns

Chevy has unleashed the unthinkable in the Corvette ZR1. The King of the Hill returns with the most powerful V8 ever produced in America from an auto manufacturer, mind-bending specs and iconic design to challenge the world’s best supercars in both coupe and convertible variants.

• Corvette ZR1 features a 5.5L, twin-turbocharged DOHC flat-plane crank V8 engine dubbed the LT7.
• The LT7 engine produces 1,064 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 828 lb-ft of torque at 6,000 rpm, per SAE guidelines the most power ever from a factory Corvette and the most powerful V8 ever produced in America from an auto manufacturer.
• Corvette ZR1 boasts a GM-estimated top speed of over 215 mph on the racetrack and will dispatch the quarter mile with a GM-estimated sub-10-second time1.
• Purposeful carbon fiber aero package creates over 1,200 pounds of downforce at top speed.
• ZR1 revives one of the most iconic styles in Corvette history: the split rear window.

“The team that revolutionized Corvette with a mid-engine architecture took on another challenge: take ZR1 to the next level,” said Scott Bell, vice president, Chevrolet. “Corvette ZR1 is about pushing the envelope with raw power and cutting-edge innovation. From Stingray, to Z06, E-Ray, and now ZR1, the Corvette family continues to elevate with each new iteration and challenge the best in the world.”

Pushing the boundaries of Engine Development

ZR1’s 5.5L LT7 twin-turbocharged DOHC V8 engine starts with the same architecture as Z06’s LT6, the most powerful naturally aspirated production V8 engine ever, and takes it to the next level with twin turbochargers the first time ever for a factory Corvette.

Dubbed the “Gemini V8” architecture, the LT6 program was only the beginning as engineers dual-pathed a goal: to create massive power, capability and character from naturally aspirated and turbocharged flat plane crankshaft twin engines.
With these goals in mind, engineers did not create an LT6 with turbochargers, but instead changed and optimized virtually every system for a boosted application.

Corvette ZR1’s 5.5L, twin-turbo DOHC flat-plane crank LT7 engine is the result of engineering prowess and pushing the boundaries of what the engine architecture can do. Thoughtful planning produced the best performance from forced induction, married with the 5.5L flat-plane engine architecture.

Unique to the 5.5L LT7 twin-turbo V8:

• Head castings with unique ports and a larger combustion chamber
• Valve train timing and lift profile optimized for forced induction with higher exhaust temp enabling exhaust valves
• Completely new intake system tuned for twin turbochargers
• CNC machined combustion chamber, exhaust and intake ports specific to the LT7
• Dual, ported shroud, ball bearing, mono-scroll (76 mm) turbochargers integrated with the exhaust manifold to reduce the volume and distance from the exhaust valve to the turbine wheel for quick response with electronic wastegates
• Intelligent anti-lag engine calibration techniques specifically for ZR1 that adapt and react to driving style
The LT7 engine also builds upon this engine architecture with:
• Added block and head machining to support turbo cooling and oiling
• Counterweight changes to account for a unique piston, and unique connecting rod for the crank train
• A secondary port fuel injection system added to deliver the needed additional fuel to support the engine’s massive output

To support the dramatic increase in power from the LT7 engine, engineers made numerous changes to the Corvette ZR1’s eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, including:
• Inner and outer input shaft upgrades
• Increased gear capacity with strength increased via shot peening for all gears
• Final drive refinements
• Oil management to support increased vehicle longitudinal and lateral capability
• Increased control valves to accommodate the higher required clutch clamp load for LT7
The LT7 engine is purpose-built to accomplish its four-figure horsepower mission with no compromises in componentry and maintains the rev-happy character that is the heart of the Gemini V8 engine family.
It will be hand-assembled by the master engine builders at the Performance Build Center, part of the Bowling Green Assembly Plant in Kentucky.

Enabling speed with ease

Purposeful aerodynamics provide the most downforce ever from a Corvette with over 1,200 pounds at top speed.
The Corvette ZR1 offers speed on tap like no Corvette before it. Two distinct setups, complete with Magnetic Ride dampers, accomplish this. The standard Corvette ZR1 chassis arrives with a sleeker body with lower drag and a small spoiler with customer-adjustable short and tall wickers.
It also includes a standard carbon-fiber front splitter, rocker moldings, side intake with integrated brake cooling, and front underwing with stall gurney deflectors. Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires wrap 20-inch front, and 21-inch rear wheels.
The standard chassis blends the best of on-road comfort and track capability with this setup.

Corvette ZR1 dispatches the world’s toughest tracks with ease, not only with the power from the 5.5L LT7 engine, but also due to additional, specific aerodynamic and cooling changes found throughout the car. These include:

• Flow-through hood: Air enters the front grille, flows through the intercooler heat exchanger and exits the hood to increase front downforce and cool charged air temperatures.
• Carbon fiber side profile air ducts: Clean, cool air is funneled through ducts, which are cleanly integrated into the signature wishbone bezel behind the cabin doors to cool the rear brakes through an intricately designed system that doesn’t impact rear wheel travel
• Unique fresh air intake ducts: Carbon fiber inlets located on top of the coupe rear hatch ingest air to cool the turbo compressor inlet air temperatures
Corvette ZR1’s optional ZTK performance package unlocks a true track weapon.

Notably, the ZTK package adds an aggressive, high-downforce rear wing, front dive planes, and a tall hood Gurney lip – all constructed from woven carbon fiber. Underneath, underbody strakes replace the standard front underwing stall Gurney to increase front downforce. The suspension tuning included in the ZTK package incorporates stiffer springs and adds Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires. Amid testing and development, the ZR1 tackled some the world’s most demanding racetracks, including the Nürburgring, Road Atlanta, and Virginia International Raceway.

Carbon Aero, featuring all aerodynamic equipment from the ZTK package, is available on the standard ZR1 chassis as well.

Controlling ZR1’s high performance is a new brake system. The brake package uses a revolutionary carbon ceramic rotor manufacturing technology to yield increased durability and reduced brake component temperatures.
Front rotors measure 15.7 inches (400mm) in diameter and rear rotors 15.4 inches (390mm) in diameter the front rotors are the largest ever equipped on Corvette. In just 24.5 seconds, the Corvette ZR1 goes from 80-200 mph and back to 80 mph 22% quicker than the C7 Corvette ZR1, and 53% quicker than the C6 Corvette ZR1.

Designed for the split window’s return

For ZR1, function and form quickly took hold to create an instant icon an icon worthy of the historic split window’s return.

Last seen on the C2-generation Corvette, and quietly previewed on the Corvette Z06 GT3.R race car, the split-window style capitalizes on the design statement that is Corvette ZR1. While serving as a statement piece, this carbon fiber “spine” between the two rear windows, available in exposed weave or body color, provides increased heat extraction from the engine compartment, working in parallel with numerous other cooling elements throughout ZR1.

The teams worked to elevate the striking design first revealed with the eighth-generation Corvette Stingray and accentuate lines that evoke the car’s sense of motion but the design’s function also helps it perform. Teams looked at every component of Corvette ZR1 to ensure cooling and aerodynamics remained top of mind, and any change accomplished the car’s mission: performance.

Additional changes include:

• A carbon fiber roof to reduce mass and lower the center of gravity for both coupe and convertible
• Unique aluminum wheel design available in four finishes, including Edge Blue — an homage to ZR1’s signature color cue
• Optional new carbon-fiber wheel design, exclusive to ZR1, to further reduce mass
• LT7 engine intake finished in Edge Blue — delivering an engine that looks as good as it performs
• Optional new carbon-fiber wheel design, exclusive to ZR1, to reduce unsprung mass by 42.8 pounds
The Corvette ZR1’s cockpit dials up the attention to detail, notably with unique ZR1 badging found on an interior plaque, the sill plates and steering wheel. A new finishing stitch pattern for the doors, specific to ZR1, is available on the 3LZ trim. A boost gauge is also present, denoting the first factory turbocharged Corvette in the nameplate’s history.
Providing further choice to customers, the Corvette ZR1 will provide a roster of customization between exterior and interior colors. Shared with the 2025 Corvette lineup, new colors such as Competition Yellow, Hysteria Purple and Sebring Orange headline updates. The latter recalls a fan-favorite hue from the previous C7-generation Corvette ZR1.
Inside, a new Habanero interior is available, as is a Blue Stitch option. Various full-length racing stripes, brake caliper colors, including an exclusive blue for the calipers, seat belt colors and more will also be available.
King of the Hill coming next year
Corvette ZR1 will enter production in 2025 and will be built at General Motors’ Bowling Green Assembly Plant in Kentucky. It joins Corvette Stingray, Corvette Z06 and Corvette E-Ray to continue elevating the Corvette family. Further details on price and availability will be shared closer to production.
Cross flags closers:
• On its first lap at the Milford Proving Ground's MRC test track, the new ZR1 clocked a faster peak speed than the production C7 ZR1.
• Engineers clocked a sub-10-second quarter-mile time on the Corvette ZR1’s first launch.
• All four test drivers clocked over 200 mph peak speed on their very first laps at the Nürburgring with ease.
• LT7 produces more power than two LS7 engines, the legendary 7.0L V-8 from the sixth-generation Corvette Z06 akin to one LS7 engine per bank.

Chevy introduced its fastest, track-focused, 2025 ZR1 model Thursday with a twin-turbocharged, FPC 5.5-liter V-8 engine that makes a stratospheric 1,064 horsepower, the first ‘Vette to hit quadruple digits.
The number puts the mid-engine sportscar in elite, million-dollar-plus hypercar territory along with European rocket ships like the 1,063-horsepower Mercedes-AMG One and 1,160-horse Aston Martin Valkyrie.
Yet the Corvette will cost a tenth of these exotics at an estimated $150,000 when it goes on sale this fall.

The staggering power number is the highest-rated V-8 made by any automaker.
It raises expectations that the hybrid-electric, all-wheel-drive version of the eighth-generation (C8), mid-engine car reportedly called the Corvette Zora, may approach 1,500 horsepower eye-watering territory occupied by exotics like the Bugatti Chiron Sport.

“We are looking to connect with Ferrari and Lamborghini customers with these performance numbers,” said Harlan Charles, Corvette marketing manager.
The ZR1 was introduced at an event in Miami, but The Detroit News got a preview of the car with its product team in Sterling Heights earlier this summer

Impressively, the ZR1 puts its 828 pound-feet of torque to the ground with the same 8-speed transmission and 13.6-inch, rear-wheel-driven tire setup as the 670-horspower Z06, the fastest, normally-aspirated Corvette ever made.
Strap twin turbos on the race-developed, screaming, 5.5-liter, overhead cam V-8 (internally referred to as the LT6) in the Z06, & Chevy engineers achieved hypercar power numbers with a redline of 8,000 RPM.

While performance numbers have not been finalized, Chevy says the ZR1 has a top speed of in excess of 215 mph and will blow through the quarter mile in less than 10 seconds.
You’ll know the ZR1 by the deep air extractor in the front hood, similar to that found on the C8.R race car that competes in the global GT3 series. Like the C8.R which won IMSA’s stop at Virginia International Raceway last weekend the hood scoop helps keep the nose on the ground when the ZR1 summons its stampede of horsepower.

Out back, the ZR1 features a split window, both an homage to the iconic 1963 Corvette and also to help feed more air to the beast amidships. Air inlets have been added to the top of the rear fenders as well. In keeping with ZR1 tradition, the badge’s signature blue trim can be found on the LT7 engine intake.

The ZR1’s cockpit gets unique ZR1 badging on the sill plates and steering wheel, and a boost gauge in keeping with the first turbocharged Corvette in the nameplate’s storied history.
In order to bring the ZR1 to a stop, the ZR1 will come standard with 15.7-inch carbon ceramic brakes in front, 15.4-inch out back.
The ZR1 goes from 80-200 mph and back to 80 mph in just 24.5 seconds, 22% quicker than the previous-gen, C7 Corvette ZR1 and 53% quicker than the C6 ZR1.

Options include a high-downforce, winged ZTK package with sticky, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, carbon-fiber wheels (reducing rolling weight by 40 pounds), and a convertible model.
At full speed, the ZTK aero-package will produce 1,200 pounds of downforce.

As The Detroit News first reported in April 2020, the ZR1 will be the ultimate, track-focused version of the eighth-generation, mid-engine Corvette C8. What The News underreported was that the so-called LT7 engine would propel the “track monster to over 800 horsepower.”

The 1,064-horse figure eclipses supercars like the Lamborghini Revuelto (1,001 hp), Tesla Model S Plaid (1,020 hp) and Dodge Demon 170 (1,025 hp).
The ZR1 is the third of four performance variants of the C8, with the Zora still in the wings.
The C8 supercar debuted as a 2020 model, followed by the 2023, 670-horsepower Z06 packing a dual-overhead cam V-8 inspired by the C8.R race car that competes in international sports car racing. Chevrolet also introduced a grand touring-focused version of the C8: the 2024, all-wheel-drive hybrid E-Ray, which is the first Corvette to be electrified.

The mid-engine ‘Vette has been a hit, with sales on course for over 32,000 units this year at an average transaction price of over $101,600.
Historically, the ZR1 badge fondly referred to by fans as the “King of the Hill” has represented advancements in engine technology, including a dual-overhead-cam V-8 in 1990, supercharged V-8 in 2009 and now the twin-turbo monster for 2025

The ZR1 is the swan song of Corvette Executive Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter, who is stepping down this year and will be remembered for realizing the first mid-engine and 1,000-horsepower Corvette. The ZR1’s introduction was pushed back to a 2025 model from a 2024 due to COVID delays.

“We went into the ZR1 program with lofty goals, but even our first development tests on-track showed the teams were already exceeding them,” Juechter said.
The Detroit News expects a fourth, mega-performance version called the Zora likely pushing $200,000 which will incorporate the LT7 engine and the electric motor in the front axle of the E-Ray for a mega-horsepower, all-wheel-drive hypercar.

The last ZR1 had front-engine architecture and ended production after the 2019 model year. It was the last model of the seventh-generation Corvette.
Despite making a staggering 755 horsepower, the last ZR1’s LT5 mill was literally bursting at the seams, its supercharger poking through the hood like Hulk’s muscles through a too-small shirt.
By going mid-engine, the eighth-generation Corvette gave the development team better rear-wheel traction and the flexibility to put an electric motor up front to complement the gas engine.

The standard, 495-horsepower C8 has an old-school, normally-aspirated LT2, 6.2-liter push-rod V-8.
The last-generation, front-engine ZR1 started at $122,000 expect the new model to push $150k when it rolls out of Kentucky's Bowling Green Assembly in 2025.
