C4 88 Coupe - ASM & 5 Pt Harness Installation.

During the past Yr, I've seen the 5 pt Harness with the ASM bar installed several different ways.

On the lap belt, some folks just put the end of the belt under the rear seat bolt and reinstalled the seat. Others made an L shaped brack to the belt could move.

As for the submarine belt. All installations I saw were useless. Everyone mounted the belt to the floor infront of the drivers seat.

Do we have any comments in this forum as to the correct installation methodology??

Any input would be greatly appreciated!!

I have the same question... what is the best way to mount the sub-belt, with stock C5 seats in place? Down the front of the seat and back to a rear seat bolt? What about down the front to a front seat bolt?

It is my understanding that the sub-belt is primarily there to hold the lap belt down (in place), so it does not lift up over the hip (pelvic) bone in a collision. It's the lap belt holding you in place, not the sub belt (sub-belt holds the lap belt in place). This means (1) there is not that much force exerted on the sub-belt, and (2) sub-belt can be mounted almost anywhere, as long as it is pulling really tightly down on the lap belt.

I agree the crouch belt is only to maintain lap belt position and frankly with also wearing the stock belts using the frame of seat on a C4 is OK, for if its strong enough to hold a 300 pound guy it can just as well support the crouch belt.

For the C5 I have AS&M system and you get a metal plate that uses both front frame bolts to floor support mounts and has a hole in the middle to bolt the belt bracket.

I have the Brey Krause bar in the Z06 and it works out very well. You can use the stock seat belts and the harness at the same time or separately. It utilizes a 6 point system rather than a five point, but you could fabricate a plate like JR's and make it a 5 point. Quality is excellent and you only have to make a small slit in the plastic near the outer seat belt attachment for the mounting point. Here in
Detroit we do not get many chances to ORR, but we run a number of low speed and high speed time trials and you are held in snugly. I even took an off course excursion into the tire wall at one track and did not noticeably move--not aches or pains.
