I have been using the brake handle on several Corvettes over the years at drag strips and never have had a problem. My '94 ZR-1 with stock GSC tires would get 1.9 60 foot times in general, bit better with drag radials.
I would look at why button is sticking and correct that.
I have never used a line lock to know if it is worth the hassle installing one.

I have seen folks grenade a parking brake on drum shoe cars doing this trick, not sure this could happen on a vette, probably not.
