Unveiled halfway across the world, instead of its home, the USA at a special event in the glamorous and amorphous Middle Eastern capital of Dubai that’s chock full of skyscrapers and mega malls, the fourth Corvette to wear the ZR1 badge is not only a standard bearer for Chevy, but for the Corvette brand as a whole

Only 2,000 to 3,000 ZR1s Chevy plans to build a year.

When it the streets next spring, everyone is going to see and hear it coming, and every Corvette and Chevy fan boy will be able to recite these numbers:
755 horses & 715 lb-ft of torque from its supercharged, 6.2-liter LT5 V-8 engine, with a top speed in excess of 210 mph.
There are no 0-60 mph or quarter mile claims yet, but expect mid to high twos to 60 and mid 10s in the quarter.

Chevy says the ZR1 is able to make its extra power thanks to the addition of a new, intercooled 2.65-liter Eaton supercharger with 52 percent more displacement than the unit fitted to the Z06’s mill, and the brand’s first use of a dual fuel direct injection system with supplemental port injection, helping deliver a more explosive mixture at full chat.
The engine also features an upgraded crankshaft, dry sump lubrication, and a new 4-inch throttle body that’s the largest ever for a Corvette.

It will also be the loudest Corvette ever, thanks to a new exhaust system that has been developed to gradually ramp up the noise as you get on it harder and is “absolutely brutal in track mode,” according to Corvette chief engineer Tadge Juechter.

The LT5’s immense power is routed through a seven-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic – the first time an auto box has been offered for the ZR1.
Juechter said they tried to get GM’s new 10-speed automatic to fit, but couldn’t make it work with the packaging. He’s confident the car’s “robust application” of the 8 speed will more than do the job.
Helping to chill everything out will be critical whether you’re driving in the brutal heat of a climate like Dubai’s or lapping your favorite circuit.
To that end there are no less than 13 heat-exchanging units, including four new radiators.

The ZR1’s front fascia was totally redesigned to optimize airflow and is essentially one giant intake.
“We went over every square millimeter,” Peters said in the team’s quest to optimize cooling while attempting to maintain a cohesive Corvette look.

The team had to work around structural changes in the front end as well to accommodate some of the additional cooling systems, and the front fenders are roughly a half-inch wider in large part to fit the wider front tires (P285/30ZR19 front, P335/25ZR20 rear).
Unlike the previous C6 ZR1, where the supercharger assembly was open for the world to see under a clear polycarbonate piece, the new, carbon fiber “halo” hood is now a complex setup with vents and a shaker piece that caps the Eaton blower and intercooler.
“We said to hell with the window,” Juechter said, wryly.

“The new hood is a bunch of different pieces and was an enormous craftsmanship challenge.”
Primary among them was fitting a powertrain that’s three inches higher than any other Corvette under the hood all while maintaining optimal driver sightlines.

The other signature feature of the new ZR1 is its colossal rear wing.

Actually, make that wings. You can go the low route with the car’s standard, fixed Low Wing, which is designed with top speed in mind.
Chevy says it has 70 percent more downforce than the base Z06 aero setup.
Or you can take the high road with the High Wing, a two-way adjustable unit by 5 degrees that’s optimized for the track and reportedly has 60 percent more downforce than the Z06 with the Z07 package.

In addition, a downforce-enhancing front underwing is used by Chevy for the first time on the ZR1 regardless of which aero package you choose
“We have a longstanding relationship with Pratt & Miller [the Corvette race team] and everything comes together in this package,” said Peters of the ZR1’s aero profile.
The High Wing setup is part of the ZTK performance package, which adds Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 summer only tires (Pilot Super Sports are standard), a front splitter finished with carbon fiber end caps and its magnetic ride setup specifically tuned for the track.

We’d bet the ZR1 with the ZTK package would give the C7.R race car all it could handle, and in fact the wing assembly is tied into the chassis, just like the race car.
Chevy claims the ZR1 generates a maximum 950 pounds of downforce at top speed with the High Wing affixed.

In case all that won’t say ZR1 enough, Chevy has also developed a special Sebring Orange paint scheme and appearance package for the car.
It comes with orange calipers to bind to the Brembo carbon ceramic brakes (you can get your calipers in multiple colors on other ZR1s), orange rocker and splitter accents, and orange and bronze interior accents.

As for the ZR1’s interior, there are two packages available, 1ZR and 3ZR, that can dress up the cabin with a carbon fiber trimmed steering wheel, competition sport seats, Bose audio, or Napa leather seats with heating and cooling.

In short, while the ZR1 is an fierce track-attacker, you can also get it with a wide array of creature comforts.
The 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is the ultimate expression of the Corvette and Chevy’s front-engine, rear drive, overhead valve V-8 formula, one that has served the brand well and delighted customers for decades.

DUBAI — The King is returning, stronger than ever.

Chevrolet today introduced the 2019 Corvette ZR1, a supercar that pushes Corvette’s performance legacy with the highest power, greatest track performance and most advanced technology in its production history.

“I’ve never driven a Corvette like this before, and nobody else has either, because there’s never been one like this before,” said Mark Reuss, executive vice president, Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain.
“Its unprecedented performance puts all other global supercars on notice that the ZR1 is back.”

The Corvette ZR1’s exclusive LT5 supercharged engine, which is rated at an SAE-certified 755 horsepower (563 kW) and 715 lb-ft of torque (969 Nm), is establishing a new benchmark in performance.
Further, the ZR1 elevates Corvette’s track capability with two wind tunnel-honed aerodynamics packages, including an available High Wing that provides an estimated 950 pounds of downforce.

Most powerful ever

The ZR1’s LT5 6.2L V-8 engine advances Corvette’s supercharging legacy, which began with the 2009 sixth-generation ZR1 and continued with the 2015 seventh-generation Z06.

The LT5 delivers the highest output ever for a Chevrolet production vehicle, thanks in part to a new, more-efficient intercooled supercharger system that offers 52 percent more displacement than the Z06’s LT4 supercharger. GM’s first dual-fuel-injection system, which employs primary direct injection and supplemental port injection, helps the LT5 achieve its record output.

Seven-speed manual and eight-speed paddle-shift automatic transmissions are available with the LT5. It’s the first time an automatic transmission has been offered in a ZR1.

Fastest ever

The 2019 Corvette ZR1’s aggressive appearance is driven by function, contributing to its distinction as the fastest production Corvette to date.

An all-new front fascia is designed to channel air for propulsion-system and drivetrain cooling, with four new radiators bringing the heat-exchanger total to 13.
A special carbon-fiber “halo” hood is open in the middle to clear the LT5 engine’s supercharger/intercooler assembly. Additional features, including aero packages with stanchion-mounted wings, help push the ZR1 harder onto the track for more confident handling and faster lap times. Top speed of the ZR1 is over 210 mph.

“As the highest-performing Corvette ever, the ZR1’s design supports its capability in every way,” said Kirk Bennion, Exterior Design manager.
“The new wings, for example, help generate more downforce without adding drag, enhancing road holding and top speed.”

The ZR1 will offer two aero packages: a standard rear Low Wing, which delivers the highest top speed and helps generate up to 70 percent more downforce than the Z06’s base aero package, and an available two-way-adjustable High Wing that offers maximum downforce on the track for the quickest lap times — about 60 percent more downforce than the Z06 with the available Z07 Performance Package.
All models also feature a Chevrolet-first, downforce-enhancing front underwing.

The adjustable High Wing is part of the new ZTK Performance Package, which also includes a front splitter with carbon-fiber end caps, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 summer-only tires, and specific chassis and Magnetic Ride Control tuning for greater cornering grip.

Both of the ZR1’s wings are tied into the chassis, like the Corvette Racing C7.R racecar, for strength and stability.

Sebring Orange Design Package

The Corvette ZR1 introduced today also debuted a dynamic, available Sebring Orange Design Package. Centered on its Sebring Orange Tintcoat exterior color, the package also includes orange brake calipers, orange rocker and splitter accent stripes, orange seat belts, orange interior stitching and unique, bronze aluminum interior trim.

The new design package complements the Corvette ZR1’s tradition of offering maximum performance with refinement and design distinction.
The driver-focused, well-appointed cockpit includes standard leather-trimmed seats, with sueded microfiber inserts offered. Heated and vented Napa leather-trimmed seating is also available, as well as a carbon fiber-rimmed steering wheel, competition sport seats, Performance Data Recorder, Bose premium audio system and more.

The 2019 Corvette ZR1 goes on sale next spring, poised to take on the world’s best.

The two-way adjustable high-wing kit lowers the top speed but gives the car 60-percent more downforce than a Z06 with the Z07 package.

A few bolts on the stanchion allow for five degrees of adjustment.
The wing is mounted to the chassis to prevent cracking the hatch under load. Every ZR1 comes with a new underwing.
The Corvette team looked at having an active rear wing. The idea was nixed after considering packaging and weight issues. Juechter said that because an active rear wing can provide low drag and high downforce when it's up they decided to "just leave the damn thing up." Underbody aero was developed with the Corvette Racing team. Balancing the big rear wing required more aero up front, so an inverted airfoil aids without having a giant shelf out front.

The high wing is part of the ZTK Performance Package (Chevy loves its build codes). Juechter and Chief Designer Top Peters say the ZTK package is equivalent to the Z07 package on the Corvette Z06.
In addition to the airplane appendage, the ZTK kit adds a front splitter with carbon-fiber end caps, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires (the same ones that are on the Z06) and different tuning for the chassis and Magnetic Ride Control.
That's right. No fancy spool-valve shocks like on the Camaro ZL1 1LE.
The ZR1 uses a short/long arm double wishbone setup with cast aluminum control arms and transverse-mounted composite springs both front and rear. It is a Corvette after all.

While Pilot Sport Cup 2s are optional, the car comes standard with Pilot Super Sport run flats.
The staggered setup - P285/30ZR19s up front and P355/25ZR20s out back - cover carbon-ceramic brakes with calipers the size of Dwayne Johnson's forearm.
With the Cup 2s, expect 60 to 0 mph stops of fewer than 90 feet, real world-class stuff.

The debut ZR1 comes in a special Sebring Orange Design Package that adds orange paint and brake calipers and orange stripes on the rocker panel and splitter.
Inside, the car gets orange seat belts, orange stitching and bronze aluminum trim.
In addition to the performance parts, all ZR1s are available with heated and ventilated Nappa leather seats, a carbon-fiber rimmed steering wheel, a Bose stereo and GM's Performance Data Recorder. Like other Corvettes, the ZR1 is available with multiple seats with varying degrees of bolstering.

People will be able to see the 2019 ZR1 at the LA show.
Chevrolet revealed the ZR1 on Sunday morning in Dubai.

Corvette product manager Harlan Charles used today’s release to confirm that the 755-hp C7 ZR1 will be at the L.A. Auto Show,
which opens on Friday, December 1st.
